FROM THE PRESIDENT – Diane Hellie
Welcome to a new season of AAUW! Our program co-chairs have some excellent programs planned for this year. At our September unit meeting we will have displays from our continuing interest groups as well as a tour/presentation on the new Cascade Meadow Environmental Center. I recommend joining 1 or more groups – it is a great way to meet other AAUW members. The League of Women Voters will also be joining us for our September meeting.
I retired from IBM at the end of June and look forward to having more time to spend on my volunteer activities including AAUW.
In June, Beth Nienow and I had the privilege of attending the AAUW National Convention in Washington DC. We heard many excellent speakers. I had the opportunity to help chop hot dogs and vegetables at DC Central Kitchen. This organization provides 4500 meals each day for 100 partner agencies and also provides culinary training to give men and women the chance to learn valuable job skills. We also joined around 600 other AAUW members and Lilly Ledbetter to lobby Congress to protect social security, to sell land to the National Women’s History Museum so they can build a museum to honor women, and for safe campuses. Because of our lobbying, Senator Amy Klobuchar signed on as a sponsor to the safe campus act. AAUW’s efforts do make a difference! In the evening we toured the Brazil embassy. I had an opportunity to talk to one of the female employees at the embassy and she was very impressed with our lobbying!
If you would like to get more involved in AAUW, we have some open positions. We are also looking for new ideas for community projects so please let me know if you have any ideas or would like to help with any AAUW projects.
